Sprinkler System Maintenance

Routine maintenance for your sprinkler system is more important than you think. Broken pipes or sprinkler heads are the obvious water and money wasters. The not so obvious problems could even cost you more. Since sprinkler systems are designed to start early in the morning when home owners are asleep or getting ready for work, most home owners will not spot system problems. Have Irrigation Pros inspect your system annually to protect your lawn, landscape and water bill.

Is the sprinkler head broken off? Usually the cause is the riser that holds the sprinkler head in place breaks and needs to be replaced. This generally takes 1 hour to repair. In most cases, the sprinkler head itself is undamaged.

Are your sprinkler heads being broken by lawn equipment or sticking up above ground level. If this is the case, sprinkler heads should be lowered to ground level or moved in from the sidewalk so that edging equipment does not break them.

Are there several heads in one zone that do not have full pressure? If the zone was working properly and no extra heads have been added, this is a sign of a broken pipe. Have Irrigation Pros check this out to prevent wasting water.

Is there a hole in the dirt around the sprinkler head? Once again this is usually caused by a broken riser. The riser is the item that holds the sprinkler head in place. This generally takes 1 hour to repair.

Does a section of sprinkler heads not come on? This can be caused by a few items. Most commonly, a valve solenoid needs to be replaced or there is a wire that is nicked or broken. Rarely it is a controller. Irrigation Pros has the equipment to quickly diagnose the problem and let you know what it will take to resolve the issue.

Is there allot of water running down the street or alley or is your car constantly getting wet? Allot of these problems can be corrected by putting in adjustable arc nozzles or simply tuning down the water output from a nozzle. This could also be a sign of a leaking sprinkler head or broken riser. Although there are some conditions, like circle driveways, that make it difficult to keep all of the water on the lawn. Let Irrigation Pros assess the situation and offer solutions.

Home owners usually increase the amount of watering time to compensate for many of these issues. This is due to the fact that there is usually is a decreased amount of water around the problem. In reality, the homeowner is over watering with the rest of the sprinkler heads in that zone to compensate for the faulty head costing the home owner each time they water.

Install rain and freeze sensors.  These devices can help save money and water. In many communities, these sensors are now mandatory on all new systems as well as being required to be retrofitted on previously installed systems.
